Hardcore / Punk
22 Longs Riffs – Défiance (Katabomb Records, Général Strike, Riot Bike Records | 12” LP)
Before you press play, you should know that listening to this latest (and – sigh – last) record by the Breton band will break your heart and make you shed more than one tear. Because, after the decision to end their adventure, they could not have written a more emotionally touching spiritual testament. 4 tracks, 15 minutes, in perfect 22 Longs Riffs style: powerful and angry but at the same time melodic and poetic hardcore. The message is clear: the powerful divide us, without unity the struggle is not effective; violence, inequality, injustice poison the world. However, when all seems lost, we must gain strength, get back up and fight again. With the closing track, “Kenavo” (goodbye in the Breton language), the band bids farewell and thanks those who have loved their music and invites you to keep fighting even without them. What to say. They will be missed. Thanks for everything, guys, and kenavo!
Shove – Agency (Rack Off Records, Drunken Sailor Records | 12″ LP)
13 punches in the face that leave no escape. That’s what comes to mind after listening to this smooth, fast-flowing record. A treat for lovers of that 80s hardcore punk of tight rhythms, vitriolic guitars, solid bass and blaring screams. The lyrics address political and social issues, a lacerating cry of protest and hatred toward patriarchy, the oppressive violence of the system and the generalized apathy that devours the world. The Melbourne-based Australian band has pulled some real magic out of its hat with this record. Play it at full volume, you will love it!
Punk with various influences
Alldeepends – No Shallow Ends (TNS Records | CD/12” LP)
This Scottish trio – and artistic collective -, which describes itself as “internationalist, anarchist and diy,” can amaze, entertain, excite and bewilder at the same time, escaping all musical genre boundaries. Voice, bass, drums and banjo give life to 9 tracks with highly original titles and that nonchalantly range from folk-country to hip hop, from jazz to powerviolence, with witty lyrics that explore the contradictions of the human soul and society, with a focus on queer issues. The first single taken, “My Transgender Dysphoria Waltz” (video here), tells with the swinging rhythm of a waltz the conflict between the joy of showing one’s true self and the fear of negative reactions, in the hope that joy will prevail: “Aren’t you so proud to be alive?” Absolute masterpiece!
Crust Punk
Portal Tomb – Last Frost (SoreMind | Tape)
This Montreal quartet comes out with a stenchcore / old school crust punk three-track demo lasting about 12 minutes. Powerful, cadenced and somber in the best stench tradition, it fires up at times and sets off wildly in fast-paced forays that are nothing short of explosive. If your bread and butter is early Bolt Thrower, Deviated Instinct or to name more recent bands, Terminal Filth and Warkrusher, this glacial and devastating demo will blow your mind.
Wolfbrigade – Life Knife Death (Metal Blade Records | 12″ LP / CD)
The standard bearers of crust punk made in Sweden are back after two years since their previous EP entitled “Anti-Tank Dogs.” They come back more explosive than ever with a 12-track smattering totaling about half an hour that as in the band’s most classic tradition can bring together lovers of hardcore punk, crust d-beat and death metal sounds of the Scandinavian school. The sounds are as usual crystal clear but at the same time rough, by now a Wolfbrigade trademark along with Micke Dahl’s always sumptuous vocal performance. This perfect blend of more complex riffs and the urgency and ferocity typical of crust punk makes this new addition to the band’s discography a gem to have and listen to on a loop.

Post Punk
Chain Cult – Harm Reduction (La Vida Es Un Mus | 12″ LP)
From chaotic and fascinating Athens Chain Cult, one of the most interesting punk bands of recent times, are back. The melancholic and anguished sounds typical of post punk meet the punk power and anger, creating a very personal blend that makes this band stand out among many in the genre. “Harm Reduction” comes after a full length and other works such as eps, demos and splits, masterpieces that had raised our expectations sky high. What can we say, we were not disappointed for a second, 8 tracks one more beautiful than the other characterized by clear and melancholic riffs – without renouncing to some more dirty and punk parts – supported by bass and drums that keep the rhythm high. The clean vocals, which manage to sit excellently between the two moods enhancing them, also play an important role in the project with introspective but at the same time social and political themes. A truly amazing work, especially suitable for those who like to get carried away by the cold autumn tones of post punk but at the same time do not want to slip into despondency and pure melancholy by reacting with determination!
Cold Summer – Altlasten (Kink Records, It’s Eleven Records | 7″)
Sharp-edged cold punk from Leipzig. 4 tracks characterized by screaming, heartbreaking native language vocals, bass and drums as mighty as a monolith, and melodic guitar lines that stick in your head from the first listen. Cold and sharp as winter in a gray German city. Fans of post-punk tending more toward hardcore absolutely cannot miss this gem!
Oi! / Punk
La Inquisición – Mundo Invisible (HFMN, Contra Records, LSM Records, Longshot Music, Clockwork Mx Records, The Firm Records, Common People Records, No Hay Emoción Records, Cargo Records | LP 12” / HFMN Crew | CD)
A slightly dirty and aggressive bass riff, guitar that follows suit, and off goes the new La Inquisición record. Mundo Invisible is the new album by the band from Barcelona. This is clearly a solid record, which captures from the first note and plays over and over again without ever getting boring. We have often found ourselves talking about this band, we have even interviewed them (go and read the article here), we love their mystical and obscure aesthetic and sound, this latest work reinforces our thoughts.
Great punk from a great band, there’s little to say, available in all formats, don’t miss out!
Ska Punk
Kill Lincoln – No Normal (Bad Time Records | CD/12” LP)
The long-awaited new album by the U.S. band does not disappoint expectations at all: half an hour of breathtakingly fast and energetic ska-punk. The title is an ironic reference to the so-called new normal we were supposed to find again after the events of 2020, and in fact the lyrics are mostly about discomfort on both an individual and societal level. A curiosity: the lyrics of the title track, which closes the album, contain a large number of quotes from Bad Time Records (founded by Mike Sosinski, guitarist and vocalist of Kill Lincoln) bands, have fun finding them all!
The Sensations / Hans Gruber and the Die Hards – Tokyo Two Step (I hate Smoke Records, Ska Punk International | 7”)
Following Mutiny and Frail’s album, Ska Punk International continues its collaboration with Japan by putting together Texans Hans Gruber and the Die Hards with Japan’s The Sensations in this split in which each band performs an unreleased song and a cover. The result is an unexpected mix of ska-punk and disparate influences, from country to rock and roll, cumbia to metal. All to dance to!
Turn Off – Avidité (Double Seven, Kanal Hysterik, Le Keupon Voyageur, Mass Prod, Trauma Social, Zone Onze Records | CD)
If you love the strand of Los Tres Puntos-style French ska-punk, this EP, the first of a trilogy whose second and third episodes will be released in the coming months, is the one for you. The four tracks deal with political topics with lyrics loaded with sarcasm and irony that gain in effectiveness thanks to the very powerful voice of the frontwoman. A must listen on a loop while waiting for the other two pieces of the triptych!
Punk Rock
Fahnenflucht – Molotov Zitrone (Aggressive Punk Produktionen | CD/12” LP)
“When life gives you lemons make a cocktail out of it. Nobody said you have to drink it.” With this sentence the German band sums up the meaning of this seventh album, poised between punk rock and melodic hardcore, between personal reflections and political and social commitment. Explosive sounds, then, in which alongside guitars and drums we find synthesizers and a surprising balalaika, and a harsh examination of burning topical issues such as Europe’s dangerous drift to the right. A content-laden record, both musically and lyrically, a must-have!
Hatsnriver – Good for nothing (DIY | 12” LP)
Originating as a solo acoustic project, this band from Vienna now presents very catchy punk rock with a hint of folk, and a pleasant mix of distorted and acoustic guitars. The 12 tracks, sung in English, deal with important themes such as life and death and social injustice, but with a very positive attitude that makes them the ideal soundtrack for a carefree trip into the September air.
