Review: Nimroad FC – Quarantotto

Nimroad FC is a young Ska Punk/Skacore band from Genoa, born in 2013. After their debut as a quartet, the group is currently composed of 8 elements with the addition of a valid wind section.

“Quarantotto” is the title of their EP released at the end of October 2018, produced in collaboration with the Genoese label Flamingo Records and also available for listening on Bandcamp. The release period, on Halloween, is not accidental: the main subject that connects the songs is in fact the horror theme, something that is already easily understood by the comic-style and fluo color cover, by Erica Fichera, which shows a werewolf with a surfboard on a roof lit by the full moon.

The album could be defined as “5 and a half steps in terror, from ska to punk”. After a very short introductory track, we move on to five songs ranging from “Transilvania Ska”, an instrumental track in which winds and upbeat rhythm dominate, to “Three Ghosts in the Hostel”, the final track and the most punk of all. Musically the album is well played and very energetic and the songs are embellished by sudden changes in rhythm, which for my taste is particularly appreciable.

Horror theme then, but faced with the typical irony of Ska Punk, where the protagonists are characters from the imaginary of terror such as zombies, ghosts and werewolves, which therefore can be read in a less detached from reality and indeed extremely topical perspective. We find ourselves projected in a very “Scary Movie” atmosphere where clichés are parodied and fears, with a very Genoese narrow-toothed laugh, exorcised. But unwillingly.
